We Asked

Your views on the development of a Digital Learning and Teaching Strategy for Scotland. This included a chance to comment on the principles of the proposed strategy, the four themes of the strategy and the priorities for action outlined under each theme.

You Said

We received 139 responses, 76 were submitted by group respondents and 63 by individuals. A clear majority of respondents agreed with the proposed principles, themes and priorities for action. However, there were a large number of comments on how the strategy could be amended and strengthened in certain areas.

We Did

We have considered all of the responses to the consultation and an independent analysis report was produced and published on the Scottish Government website. In consequence of the positive consultation response, the Scottish Government will produce a Digital Learning and Teaching Strategy which will be shaped by the consultation responses.

Overview

This consultation seeks views on the development of a Digital Learning and Teaching Strategy for Scotland.

Digital technology has rich potential to support education in Scotland’s schools in a wide variety of ways, and it is vital to ensure that our children and young people are equipped with the essential digital skills they will need to flourish in the 21st century.  A well-defined strategy will help to make sure that digital technology is embedded in learning and teaching across the curriculum.

The strategy builds on important work delivered to date across Scotland to support digital learning and teaching.  It summarises evidence from research and engagement with stakeholders about the impact of digital technology on important priorities for education in Scotland.  From that evidence, we have drawn out key themes and identified proposed activities that the Scottish Government and its partners will focus on to help unlock the full potential of digital technology and support positive educational outcomes for all. 

Throughout, the strategy highlights that partnership working with key stakeholders will be at the heart of development and successful implementation.

Key themes

The four key themes emerging are:

  • Empowering leaders of change to drive innovation and investment in digital technology for learning and teaching
  • Improving access to digital technology for all learners
  • Ensuring curriculum and assessment relevance in a digital context
  • Extending the skills and confidence of teachers in the appropriate and effective use of digital technology

Why We Are Consulting

We are seeking views on all aspects of the consultation document to help shape the development of the strategy.

The public consultation will run until 17 December 2015 and is open to all.

We welcome formal consultation responses via the online questionnaire below, or by email or post. (Please see Annex B in the consultation document for more details.)

To support the consultation, we will be holding a number of face-to-face events across Scotland during this period.  These events will provide opportunities for deeper dialogue and discussion about the key themes and priorities for action outlined in the consultation document. Beyond the formal public consultation, everyone with an interest is also invited to share views and participate in ongoing dialogue about the strategy through online strategy development conversations.

We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to help shape the approach to digital learning and teaching in Scotland and ensure we take full advantage of the benefits offered by the digital age for all our children and young people.
